Every restaurant has its own atmosphere and brand, but these six unique places take it to a whole different level of weird, unique, or downright dangerous.
1) Buns & Guns, Lebanon
This restaurant is military-themed from the ground, up- complete with helicopter sounds playing in the background. The theme is meant to reflect the period of time in 2006 with Lebanon was at war with Israel, which could be disturbing to most patrons, but manager Yussef Ibrahim says most are just amused. Delicacies to choose from include a Terrorist meal or a Mortar burger.
2) Opaque, US
The first “dining in the dark” experience to hit the US, Opaque presents a truly unique dining experience. Patrons dine in complete, desensitizing darkness, abandoning vision to truly open their senses to the food they’re eating. Blind or vision impaired individuals trained to serve in the dark guide customers around the restaurant. Before seating, customers choose their meals from a menu in a lighted lounge room. After that, it’s pitch black until the meal is over.
3) Dinner In The Sky, Worldwide
Dinner In The Sky offers a unique experience for those unafraid of heights. Diners gather at a table suspended 50 meters in the air and is available pretty much anywhere. All that’s needed is a space to rise and fall with owner permission. The “In The Sky” brand also does weddings, lounges, and showbiz opportunities for those ready to take their event to new heights.
4) Cannibalistic Sushi, Japan
There’s a tradition in Japan of eating sushi and sashimi off a naked woman’s body- but this restaurant brings it to a whole new level. A body made of dough for ‘skin’ and sauce for ‘blood’ is served on a gurney and placed on diners tables. The waitress then uses a scalpel to cut into the body, revealing edible organs made entirely of sushi, and patrons are then allowed to dig in. So, if you’ve got the stomach for it, Bon Appétit!
5) Heart Attack Grill, US
Aptly named, The Heart Attack Grill has served up the world’s most artery-clogging food since 2005 and has recently had two victims suffer heart attacks while eating at the restaurant. Founder Jon Basso calls the menu “nutritional pornography”- waiters dressed as nurses approach tables with stethoscopes to “diagnose” patients with either a single, double, triple, or quadruple bypass burgers ranging from 8 to 22 ounces of meat. The famous quadruple is coated with lard, has four half-pound patties, eight slices of cheese, and 20 pieces of bacon, completely “unadulterated” (or, not drained of grease from cooking). “Flatliner Fries” are also served with every meal, consisting of fresh-cut potatoes deep fried in pure lard. If you think you’ve got the stomach for it, take your chances.
6) Cabbages & Condoms, Thailand
This restaurant gives birth control a whole new meaning by handing out condoms, not mints, at the door when you exit. Their slogan “our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy” is paired with food items such as the “Spicy Condom Salad.” The mission behind the restaurant was to encourage family planning and profits support the Population and Community Development Association.
