Flowers come in so many shapes and colors that it is sad that so few are actually used in bouquets and other flower arrangements. In Canada there are some truly beautiful flowers that make for great decorations and give a unique feel that is native to the homeland, but very few retailers use these flowers because customers are stuck in the rut of buying roses and lilies for their loved ones, and will not consider purchasing other flowers. By shopping at local vendors and using flowers that are native to Canada, flower shoppers can save money and encourage local business growth.
One of the most beautiful native Canadian flowers is the Columbine. These flowers are part of the buttercup family of flowers and they have a very aromatic fragrance that smells sweet and stays in the air all day long. They are native to mountainous and very cold areas of Canada, so they are a hearty flower that will last a long time in an arrangement or if planted in the garden. The vibrant colors make the flowers very attractive as a choice for a loved one, though they are not a good choice for a funeral arrangement. A Columbine flower works well on its own, but putting too many of them in an arrangement can be overwhelming to the nose.
New England Aster
Though the name sounds like this flower comes from the United States, it is actually native to both the United States and Eastern Canada. The Aster is a large blooming flower made up of many thin petals that spread the color and give the appearance of a mini sun on at the top of the flower stem. The flower has a much more mild fragrance than some of the other flowers, and the Aster looks great when used as part of a larger bouquet or arrangement. They are not best used on their own, as the petals are very fragile, but they are excellent for giving a splash of color to another group of flowers.
The Blue Iris has special importance to the people of Quebec, where it serves as their floral emblem, and it is one of the best Canadian flowers to use in floral arrangements. The bold colors makes the Blue Iris stand out above other flowers, and the sturdy nature of the petals and the stem mean that they Blue Iris can stand on its own, and actually serve as the centerpiece of a floral arrangement. The Blue Iris can be used to express a number of emotions, from love to sympathy, though their somber color makes them the very best choice for funeral arrangements of all of the flowers that are native to Canada. Most florists will have several different arrangements available that feature the Blue Iris, including arrangements for funerals and some that can be used for other purposes.

I am Ben Fording, amateur florist and flower arranger. I love the colors and varieties of flowers that Canada has to offer and for over two decades I have included the native Canada flowers in my arrangements. When I do not have the time to do the arranging on my own, I find that the iris arrangements at http://www.allflowersandgifts.com look amazing.
