We have recently discussed how dolls can make the perfect gifts for girls. However, contributing to a doll collection can make gifts become predictable and boring to the little girl. After all, the whole fin in getting gifts to the surprise element, and when you know Aunt June always gets you a doll, it may take away the surprise element and get a little boring.
Instead of buying a doll for every occasion, you can throw in a surprise that won’t be expected, that can be done from the comfort of your own home, and is cost effective.
Making clothes for dolls could be the perfect gift for girls and can be done in a few simple steps.
What You Will Need
For this instructional blog, you are going to need a few tools for making the dolls clothes. You are going to need some newspaper to create your pattern. You will need some fabric that the dress will be made of, scissors to cut the fabric and pattern, and a sewing kit.
Making Your Dress Pattern
You are going to want to use a doll for comparison, so perhaps you can borrow one of the girl’s dolls for reference. You are going to want to lay the doll on a newspaper that is close to the size of the doll in both height and width. You are going to want some room for error, so a little extra on both measurements is ok.
Once you have the measurements of the doll on the newspaper, you want to begin by drawing two should straps and a neckline. From there you are going to want to draw your dress in the design you are hoping for, on your newspaper. Remember, this dress could be the perfect gifts for girls, so you want this design to be unique.
Cutting Out And Sizing The Pattern
Once you are done drawing the basic outline of the pattern, you want to cut the pattern out of the newspaper. Once you have completely cut the pattern out, you want to drape the pattern around the doll to make sure the dress is going to fit. You may want to consider starting with a bigger pattern, because it is easier to cut the pattern down then it is to add paper to the pattern.
Once you put the pattern on the doll, you can use your scissors to make any needed adjustments, including the pattern angles and neckline.
Making Sure Your Pattern Is Even
You want to make sure your pattern is even since this is going to be your guideline for making your dolls dress. You can make sure your dolls pattern is even by folding the newspaper pattern in half.
If when the pattern is folded perfectly in half, the paper is not even, you are going to want to use the scissors and trim the edges so your dress pattern is even and ready for you to begin turning the pattern into a dress for the doll.
