Your house shouldn’t just be your house; it should be your home. Everybody should own a home that reflects their own personal tastes and styles, and every home owner should feel inspired to take on a few do it yourself projects. Sometimes after spending a few years in the same house you want to spice things up a little bit. A fresh coat of paint or a new sofa may be able to do the trick, but sometimes you want something that’s a little different.
There’s nothing more satisfying than being able to create something for your new place. You don’t have to hire a contractor or an interior designer to make a change every time you want one. There are plenty of projects the average home owner can do on their own that will change the look of their space and reflect their own personal style and craftsmanship.
Revamp Your Entrance
The front of your home is the first thing you guests see when they come for a visit, and if you want to do a simple project that will significantly enhance the look of your home, do something different to your front door area. Try a bold new coat of paint that acts as an accent piece for your entire home. If you’re feeling adventurous you could purchase a brand new door with a new window placement, or you could just install a new doorknob and doorknocker for a subtle change.
Make New Wall Art
Pictures of the family and few watercolors are nice, but if you want to do something different for your room consider experimenting with new wall art. Do you have a leftover piece of fabric that you love, but don’t have enough of it to make something from it? You could easily frame that piece of fabric for a unique wall hanging. If your kid’s artwork is taking up a lot of space on your fridge, transfer it to a frame and hang it on your wall. You’ll be able to have a truly unique piece of art, and your child will be proud to have some of their work framed and hanging for company to see.
Try New Lighting
Lighting sets the mood of a room, and buying a new lamp or experimenting with a new lampshade could be all you need to do for a significant décor change. Try installing a new lighting fixture over your dinner table, or make a fabric covered lamp shade for a bold new décor item. You could install a dimmer switch, or simply use a light bulb that has different lighting settings.
Look For a New Table
Your table is the centerpiece of your room, and if you feel like you need something new in a room you could purchase a new table. If you have a wooden end table, look for something with metal table bases. If you’ve always had an interest in wood working, you could carve a few designs in your wooden table to spruce it up. If you want to do something new but don’t want to do something drastic, a new coat a lacquer could make your table look like new again.
Making small changes to your house can make your home feel fresh and new. It doesn’t take a lot of time or even money to make your home unique.
