The green lobby has grown as a movement very rapidly in the past few decades and it has now become quite powerful in its appearance in the political world. There are constantly discussions in the newspapers about the green movement but does it necessarily mean that the movement has any real power in the actual political decisions?
The green lobby is, as mentioned above, constantly on the news and there is a lot of noise following the movement wherever it goes. But majority of this noise hasn’t really resulted, at least publicly, into any real solutions or chances.
Much of this is also because it takes such a long time for politicians to make any big decisions anyway. For instance, the use of wind power has long been on the table without any real impacting policy changes being put into effect for a long time now.
In the UK the current Chancellor George Osborne has according to the Telegraph even referred to the movement as “Al Qaeda”. This clearly highlights the position of the green movement quite efficiently.
Too Much Focus On Attack?
Perhaps the lack of influence by the green movement has previously been due to the tactics that they have used. Because of the attack tactics that they use and their focus on highlighting the problems the movement has missed a big opportunity.
If they place more importance in the benefits of green living and celebrate the changes that have already happened the lobby would be better equipped in getting things done. Because of the current economic situation politicians aren’t keen on hearing ideas that might cost them money, especially in the short-term since politicians only live for elections, but rather want to hear how to make savings in the short-term.
Using the right tactics the green movement might get away from the public eye but the lobbying might be more effective.
Is The Public Tide Moving?
What might become to the rescue of the green movement is the fact that public opinion is slowly beginning to shift. Consumers are becoming more aware of the green choices available and they are finally starting to appreciate the benefits that using green products might provide them instead of just thinking it is for the benefit of the environment.
This has also meant that there is now a growing movement among businesses to go green as well. Many businesses are also realising the cost effectiveness of using green products and making eco-friendly decisions within their code of conduct.
It is more and more fashionable and trendy to apply eco-friendly options to business solutions. Construction materials like the ETFE panels from Vector Foiltec and different recycling options available are making business appreciate the benefits that eco-friendly living brings.
This will most likely give new power to the green lobby as well. Knowing that you have the public as well as growing business opinion backing you will give them better tools to keep political leaders in check and make choices that will benefit the planet as a whole.
