Previous blogs have already inspired you to make your own personal doll to add to your doll collection. All you need is some motivation and some tools to create a unique doll that no one else has, because this doll came from your own creative mind.
Our last blog walked you step by step in creating the frame for a dolls head, well now it is time to add the facial features.
Making Sure Your Face Is Balanced
The last blog showed you how to make a frame for the head and use your fingers to create the sockets for the eyes and mouth placement. We also had you use small balls to give your doll a frame for her nose. Now the first step is to make sure your face is balanced.
You may want to use one of your other dolls as a reference to make sure your dolls face isn’t lopsided. The next step is to take two balls of equal size and place them in the eye sockets to make sure each eye is the same size.
Making The Eyes
Once you have got two balls inserted and determine the dolls eyes are equal in size, it is time to use some of those tools. Using one of your tools, shape the dolls eyes into a shape like an almond. You want to press on both ends of the eye, giving the eye a rounded look.
It is important to make sure your almond shape, eyes are round, and so your dolls should be too. Using these same tools you are going to want to sculpt the eyelids around the eyes giving your doll a realistic look.
You are going to want to add on to the eyelids and keep them rounded yet smooth. You will use this extra clay to begin forming the features around the eyes, such as the brow line. This step allows you to start being creative about your doll, there is no right or wrong brow line, and this is going to be one of your dolls distinctive features.
Forming The Nose
The last blog had you use three balls to form the nose and the nostrils. This foundation is simple to turn into the nose, all you want to do is take your tools and combine those three dolls. Just like the brow line, this step is going to allow you to be creative.
Make sure you keep everything rounded, if you feel like you messed up and have to start over, start over using the three balls to get your foundation back.
Forming The Lips
Forming the lips is simple; you are going to want to add some extra clay to the indent you made from your fingers. You are going to want to slice a line in the clay to give the appearance the mouth is slightly open. Then using your tools you are going to want to sculpt rounded lips.
Once your lips are formed, your dolls head is starting to sport all you desired features.
