The challenges celebrities face in recovery and the steps that need to be taken.
After two DUI’s and publically admitting he has an alcohol problem, San Francisco 49’s Aldon Smith has checked into rehab. With pressure from fans and others to return to football as soon as possible, it may make it difficult him to maintain continued focus on recovery. Smith should stay in rehab as long as possible, preferably for 90 days, and then take steps to build a new life that focuses on sobriety.
It’s a situation many celebrities find themselves in. A career can continue to grow and achieve success, as an alcohol or drug problem simultaneously continues to spiral out of control. There’s always a risk that addiction will harm a career or worse yet, the health of a celebrity.
If an addiction is left untreated, it’s almost guaranteed that it will happen. Rehab is taking the first step, but it’s not the ultimate solution. Continued sobriety depends on the celebrity themself, and whether they can make a plan to return to their careers without falling back into old drug or alcohol habits.
Steps To Recovery
Anyone who abuses drugs and alcohol, whether they are a celebrity or not, needs to take certain steps that encourage lasting sobriety. Drug and alcohol addiction didn’t happen over night, and it can’t be fixed overnight either.
1. Making the decision to get help.
It all starts here, with admitting there is a problem and making a decision to seek help. Detoxing may also be necessary, especially if the abuse has been going on for years. Detox needs to be done under the care of a medical profession because withdrawal symptoms can be severe and even life threatening.
Recovery professionals are now recommending the a patient stay in rehab for 90 days. The chances of a lasting sobriety seem to increase when treatment lasts longer. Perhaps this is because it gives a patient more time to develop a plan for sobriety after leaving rehab and to develop connections with others in the program.
Treatment can and should continue long after treatment at a rehab center is completed. Because continued focus on sobriety is needed, a recovering addict or alcoholic needs to develop habits that keep them motivated.
This can be done by participating in support groups and 12 step programs. These groups not only provide healthy routines, they also give one opportunities to connect and share with others who are facing the same challenges and struggles.
4. Maintaining Sobriety.
In addition to attending groups and meetings, there are others areas of life that need continued focus. Keeping your body healthy with exercise and proper nutrition, as well as maintaining mental health, is beneficial.
Meditation, yoga, and other mind body methods are just some of methods that are effective. It’s important to also maintain awareness of oneself in order to recognize when other addictions develop to replace addictions to substances. Many former alcoholics find themselves addicted to work, exercise, and other behaviors.
