If you think there are no easy ways to cut down the cost of your business electricity bills – don’t give up hope yet, as this blog will outline some quick and easy ways that you can actually save money.
It is an interesting theme as even the power suppliers themselves will often try to give business electricity customers a nudge in the right direction – so it is in your own interest to take action.
Last year for example, British Gas did a study on business energy which led to them producing a news article declaring many UK businesses were wasting a staggering 50% of their electricity, with smart meters showing 46% of power consumption occurred out of work hours.
It is often simple things that tend to get overlooked, as I’ll explore further here.
A Shining Light
While light is good during the day, a light left on all day is obviously a bit of a drain on resources, especially if it is in a corridor or room which is rarely used. Try to make sure you have some kind of policy in place to prevent this.
One of the things that British Gas from last study revealed was that many businesses had lighting on in car parks…on the weekends, when no-one works! Of course some businesses do have staff working unusual hours, but if yours doesn’t, well just try to make sure little things like this aren’t ignored.
On the subject of lights, try to use energy efficient bulbs, and also keep the fixtures themselves clean. Sometimes fixtures can get so dirty they actually lose a lot of brightness through the grim, not good!
Not In Use, Switch It Off
Another obvious point that people often think to do at home, but seem to forget in the work environment. If an electrical item is not in use, just turn it off. Standby is ok, but for your own sake, it is best to fully turn off appliances and other electrical items, this can soon get you on the way to saving money so why ignore your common sense?
Shop Around, Switch It Up
From switching it off, to switching it up. There are a lot of advantages to gain in switching electricity provider. Best of all, it is not actually that complicated at all – a myth (at least in a domestic setting) the representative of the country’s energy suppliers, Energy UK created a YouTube video in order to bust.
Although that social media campaign was aimed at domestic customers, switching suppliers is also relatively easy. So if you shop around and find a cheaper deal, just make sure you don’t have to pay any early exit fees.
Check Your Bills
On that same theme, it is in your best interest to read the small print so you know whether you’re also on an automatic rollover contract. Although many energy suppliers have stopped this kind of contract now, this is not guaranteed so it is in your interest to check you are not on such a tariff.
You can also check your energy usage yourself to let your energy firm know more accurate readings for your business, rather than simply using estimates. This can be another easy way of saving money for your business, all it takes is a few minutes to jot down some numbers and then giving your supplier a call!
